On July 14-15, 2018, Papa Sy and Studio at 550 put on the first Cambridge Teranga (Together) Senegalese Village Dance Festival for Children, a public festival for the children and families of the Boston-Cambridge-Somerville area. Papa Sy’s artistic spirit has always been connected to his passion for sharing his knowledge with young dancers and contributing to their artistic education. Everywhere he has lived, he has put on a children’s dance festival, the last of which saw 250 and was hosted at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Now, as a Boston resident, artist, and teacher, Papa is excited to bring this festival to his new home.

The Festival features two days of Senegalese dance classes taught by two local Cambridge dancers and teachers. In addition to movements, the classes teach the music, dress, and significance of the dances, in the vein of a village-centered storytelling experience. The Festival brings together West African artists, drummers, dancers, and the children of the Boston-Cambridge-Somerville area in a celebration of diversity, dance, and community. The Festival also benefits local businesses and African vendors, who share their products outside of the studios.

The Teranga Children’s Festival is slated to return in 2019; more information to come soon! If you are interested in being a festival sponsor, teacher, or participant, please contact us.
